Implant Supported Dentures

What are implant supported dentures?
Implant-supported dentures are an excellent and cost-effective solution for patients seeking a more secure and stable alternative to traditional dentures.
These dentures are anchored to dental implants, providing a snug fit that eliminates the slipping or discomfort often associated with standard dentures. This approach uses fewer implants compared to full implant restorations, making it a budget-friendly option while still delivering significant improvements in comfort, function, and confidence. Ideal for those looking to restore their smile and quality of life without a hefty price tag, implant-supported dentures offer a reliable and long-lasting solution tailored to your needs.
Implant-supported dentures not only enhance function but also help preserve jawbone health by stimulating natural bone maintenance, which is often lost with traditional dentures. At Marius Street Family Dental, we customize each implant-supported denture to suit your unique needs, ensuring a comfortable fit and a natural-looking smile that boosts confidence and quality of life.
What is the process and Cost?
After a thorough assessment which includes a 3D scan of your jawbone, we would give you a personalised plan and quote. The implants are placed at our clinic and allowed to integrate with the jawbone. We then place attachments either into your existing denture or make a new denture which clips onto your implants.
Cost: $2300 per implant with attachment. Denture is quoted separately.

Advantages of Implant Supported Dentures
Implant supported dentures aim to reduce a lot of the disadvantages that traditional dentures have, but are much more affordable than full implant bridges. They are also great in cases where there is not enough bone for implant bridges and the patient wants to keep treatment simple (avoid extensive bone grafting).
Traditional full denture success depends largely on your ability to adapt the muscles to keep them in. Many people can never adapt to them. 50% of lower dentures do not get worn. Studies have shown that people who wear full dentures actually chew differently and only have 7-25% bite force compared to teeth. By necessity (because they use suction to stay in), they are bulky. They often interfere with speech and tongue function. Using implants rather than suction to keep your dentures in increases the comfort, bite force and means we can make the denture more minimal.
The biggest disadvantage of dentures is that they accelerate the loss of good bone and gum (which is why you need to get dentures relined). The bone continues to shrink away after the teeth are extracted, so the dentures will have less and less to hold them as the years go on. This is worse on the lower jaw. On the upper jaw, with age and with tooth loss, the sinus floor gets lower and lower which makes it harder and harder to put implants in in the future. Implant supported dentures do not stop bone loss but slows it down a lot compared to wearing traditional dentures.
Disadvantages of Implant Supported Dentures
- They are still dentures - we can reduce the flanges (the extensions) but they will still be bulkier than a fully implant retained porcelain bridge.
- The implants support the denture but there has to be inbuilt movement so that you can remove it.
- Dentures will wear down, stain, chip, and have a generally lower life expectancy than porcelain bridges.
- In the upper jaw, the bone is softer so does not support lots of movement as well as the lower jaw. The inbuilt movement of dentures causes the implants have a higher failure rate than when they are supporting bridges which have no movement.
